When Washington, D.C. officials’ efforts to slow the spread of HIV down stalled, it led to a rise in other STI diagnosis – to record highs even.
In 2015, during the first year of office for Mayor Muriel E. Bowser, there were 400 new cases of HIV. To stop the spread of the disease, Bowser set a goal to reduce the number in half by 2020.

overcome. The district had 368 new HIV cases for 2017, and the
long-term trend shows a steady drop in the number of new infections.
Kharfen, with D.C. Department of Health, described this as a pause of
many years of continuous drops. However, it does highlight the issue
that what officials are doing is working and must be stepped up

Kharfen said the efforts to get people to use the PrEP drug is
leading to more testing and more positive diagnosis for other STIs.
He said it was time to change how to communicate with young people about their sexual choices but in a positive way.
Here’s what we've been up to recently.
Most people know that the HPV rates among sexually active adults are fairly high and there is a new super gonorrhea bug that’s making it difficult to treat some gonorrhea cases. However, the British Association of Sexual Health and HIV (or BASHH) said a new worrisome STD is making its way in the public – Mycoplasma genitalium.
In the beginning, HIV drugs could be reduced to nearly untraceable levels, which means it’s no longer a death sentence for those who have the virus. Today, there is a treatment that allows HIV-negative people to remain HIV even if they have an HIV partner. However, to defeat the AIDS-causing virus, doctors must come up with a vaccine.
